Why Summa is breaking ground in the HEC-Dow Jones-ranking

  • News

Earlier this year, Summa earned fourth place in the 2025 HEC-Dow Jones ranking, becoming the first and youngest dedicated thematic investment fund to enter the top five. The result placed Summa fourth among 695 private equity firms.

What separates consistent private equity performers from the rest? At Summa’s 9th Annual Investment Meeting, Professor Oliver Gottschalg, creator of the HEC-Dow Jones Performance Ranking, shared his answer with investors, portfolio company CEOs and the Summa team.

“The top firms in the ranking pursue very different investment strategies, but they have one thing in common,” said Professor Gottschalg. “They have developed a distinct area of expertise and built their investment approach around it.”

When asked what separates consistently strong performers, Professor Gottschalg told the audience: “They focus on their strengths and execute on those.” His research points to the value of having a clear focus, whether by sector, geography, deal type or investment theme, while retaining enough flexibility to pursue opportunities as they emerge. This resonates with Summa’s investment strategy across Circularity, Sustainable Food, Energy Transition and Tech-Enabled Resilience.

«Top performer for a long time»

In conversation with Summa Founder and Managing Partner Reynir Indahl, Professor Gottschalg praised Summa’s model and pointed to the possibility of sustained performance in the years ahead: “There are many ingredients in there that, according to my research, make Summa very likely to be among the top performers for a long time.”

Summa’s position in the ranking was cited as evidence that a thematic investment strategy can compete with established private equity firms on performance. Gottschalg drew a parallel with the evolution of electric cars, which moved from being associated primarily with sustainability-minded consumers to delivering compelling performance in their own right. He suggested Summa could be on a similar path in sustainable investing, showing that a thematic strategy can also deliver strong financial performance.

“Our investment themes are not a label. They are built on a theory of change we have researched and published in our thematic reports, and they shape how we source, build and grow companies. It is encouraging to see the research confirm what we see across our portfolio,” Reynir Indahl responded.

The lower mid-market offers significant opportunity

The ranking discussion also highlighted the structural advantages of investing in the lower mid-market. Reynir Indahl noted that this category is particularly appealing for Summa because there are more companies to choose from.

Gottschalg added that among smaller funds, the gap between the best and worst performers is wider, but their average returns are higher than those of larger-cap strategies. For Summa, which has built its strategy in this part of the market, the finding is particularly relevant. As professor Gottschalg put it: “Small does seem to be beautiful in private equity.”

For Summa, the ranking is a recognition of performance to date. But Indahl also underscored what matters going forward:

“We have proven our thesis, and we are determined to stay close to the strengths that built our track record. We will continue to show that investing in solutions to global challenges is a source of competitive financial performance,” he said.

The HEC-Dow Jones MidMarket Buyout Performance Ranking was developed as a tool to identify the world’s most consistent value creators. It assesses firms based on the aggregate performance of their buyout funds raised between 2012 and 2021, using a combination of absolute and relative performance measures. Summa ranked fourth among 695 private equity firms.
