Summa charity

We have an ambition for all Summa employees to volunteer in charity activities that are outside of our daily job and responsibilities. The Summa Oslo Office is currently engaged with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and Petter Uteligger Foundation. The Summa Stockholm Office collaborates with the organization Right to Play.

The Norwegian Refugee Council

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent humanitarian organization working to aid refugees in more than 34 countries. Around the world, an excess of 80 million people have been forced to flee because of violence, conflict, or persecution. NRC aims to support immediate humanitarian needs, prevent further displacement, and contribute to durable solutions. They provide camp management, food assistance, clean water, shelter, legal aid, and education. Last year, the NRC assisted almost 12 million people who had been forced to flee.

“With Summa we had a safe place to explore how to think of new funding opportunities and ways to adjust our investments from a new, commercial perspective.” –
Sean Nicholson, NRC

Summa Equity supports the NRC with strategic and financial topics on relevant cases. Through workshops and working sessions, the dedicated Summa team provides their competence and experience to help identify growth levers and investment opportunities. One of these cases included assistance on NRC’s project “Safe Nights Rest”, which aims to create a housing platform for refugees. Through collaborative workshops, Summa assisted with financial and legal insights to attract funding. The project allowed the Summa team to apply their competences in a volunteer setting and contribute to an important cause.

As part of a broader strategy exercise for NRC, Summa’s Kari and Sebastian joined a group of different NRC leaders in outlining potential growth avenues for the organization. The group spent 5 workshops together over Zoom to outline a short-list of different growth avenues, create a strategic framework to evaluate each, and assess each growth avenue using the strategic framework. One of the highlights included having Summa’s CIO, Christian Melby, present on “How Summa Makes Investments”, touching topics such as making difficult strategic decisions under uncertainty.

Right to Play
RIght to Play

Right to Play Sweden is a non-profit association that works with young individuals who have recently moved to Sweden. In collaboration with the municipality, associations, businesses, and the young people themselves, they aim to provide activities to increase societal opportunities. Through activities strongly rooted in the program’s goals - increased employability, improved language, expanded network and strengthened self-esteem – they work so that each young person is provided with the toolkit to become an active participant in the Swedish society.

Together with Right to Play, Summa Equity developed the mentorship program “Fill in a CV!”. Two programs of 3 months each was completed during the autumn of 2019 and the spring of 2020. 14 young people participated in the program and worked with an equal number of mentors to develop their skillset and confidence in job application processes. They updated their CVs, wrote personal letters, practiced job interviews and applied to jobs during their time together. Of the 14 young participating, 12 got jobs through the mentoring program!

A youth who participated in the program said:

“The mentorship program has meant a lot to me! I received a lot of guidance and for the first time, it felt like I received proper help on these topics. Before the program, I was unsure on how to write a CV and personal letters. I started to wonder if there was something wrong with my CV, but now I feel good about it – and I got a job!”

Petter Uteligger Foundation

Summa Equity supports the Petter Uteligger Foundation, a Norwegian organization with the purpose to brighten up everyday life for the homeless and people with substance abuse challenges.

During Christmas 2019, we handed out Christmas goodies to over 250 people. This Easter, the Petter Uteligger Foundation received support from Canon and Summa Equity to distribute more than 1000 Easter eggs to people in challenging situations.
